Cancer protective
While the rate of colon cancer in the United States continues to climb (25 deaths per 100,000 population annually, the third-highest form of cancer in the United States), the death rate from colon cancer in Japan is more than one-third lower (16 deaths per 100,000 population annually). Why the difference in colon cancer rates between the populations of these two modern, industrialized nations?
One factor that has been implicated in the lower incidence of colon cancer in Asian populations is the traditional Japanese diet, which is associated with higher densities of bifidobacteria and other bacteria considered to be beneficial.
One study by Buddington et al, (Am J Clin Nutr 1996;63: 709-16), concludes that the enzyme "B-Glucuronidase, which has been implicated in carcinogenesis," is significantly reduced in the colon of persons with NutraFlora-supplemented diets. Recent green tea research focuses on its ability to ward off many types of cancer. Much of the initial evidence that green tea is anti-carcinogenic is based on epidemiological studies which show lower rates of many types of cancer among populations such as Japan and China that drink green tea as part of a daily cultural habit. Recently, however, controlled studies on green tea extract have yielded impressive results, identifying the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as the responsible component.

EGCG virtually halted production of certain inflammatory chemicals during the experiment. Specific lab tests show that EGCG blocked a chemical chain reaction linked to inflammation and joint damage.
Green tea's antioxidants have been shown to be highly beneficial to the heart—they help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. In fact, studies show that supplement use of green tea extract can double the rate of cholesterol excretion. Selenium and Immune Response
In a double-blind study of elderly people, researchers at the University of Brussels found taking 100mcg of selenium a day improved certain factors in immune functioning by 79 percent. One reason: The body needs selenium to produce a critical antioxidant enzyme. This enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, is responsible for destroying lipid-damaging peroxides and it helps detoxify cellular fats that otherwise lower immunity, foster cancer and destroy arteries. In this role, selenium complements the anti-oxidizing function of vitamin E. Conversely, low levels of glutathione peroxidase lowers overall immunity, and its lack creates a climate for cancer and hastens the erosion of the arteries. Therefore selenium is crucial in protect the heart, liver and cardiovascular system. [1]
Selenium and Cancer
A 10-year study, led by University of Arizona epidemiologist Dr. Larry Clark, revealed that there were 50% fewer cancer deaths among those ingesting the selenium, 63% fewer cases of prostate cancer (cancer originating in the prostate gland), 58% percent fewer colon cancers and 39% fewer lung cancers. Half of the group of 1,312 patients were given a placebo and half received selenium. In this study involving 8271 person-years, selenium did not show a protective against skin cancers (basal or squamous cell) but because of the overall reduction in cancer mortality the control group (no selenium supplements) was stopped prior to trial's end—presumably to start the control group on supplemental selenium! Clark saw no signs of toxicity from the selenium supplement called selenomethionine, derived from yeast. The daily dose used of 200mcg is about five times what most Americans consume. Other studies indicate that you would have to get more than 2,500 mcg of selenium per day for an extended period to receive a toxic amount.

CoQ10 is a "conditionally essential nutrient", since the body does not make enough to meet the needs under certain conditions. It maintains energy levels and is an excellent antioxidant. CoQ10 production in the body slows down as we age, staring from the 20s. In addition, there are many stress and disease conditions under which CoQ10 status is further compromised.
